Task 1: Comprehension

Watch the video and select the items that are mentioned in the video.

Task 2: Synonyms

  1. You can improve your memory of a word by associating it with its synonyms. A synonym is a word that has the same, or nearly the same meaning as another word. The following words appeared in the video, match them with their synonyms.

  2. Look in a dictionary and find example sentences of the words above. Try replacing a word with its synonym and decide if they are interchangeable in different circumstances.

  3. Construct your own sentences using the words above. This can help you memorize the words even better.

Extended Task: Collocation

Another method to improve your vocabulary is learning the way in which particular words tend to occur or belong together - also called collocations. For example in the video: Does the human race ‘create’ or ‘produce’ a problem [00:33]? Do we ‘pay’ or ‘give’ attention to our natural environment [00:39]?

The best way for acquiring collocations is to read. Reading is an excellent way to learn vocabulary and collocations in context and naturally.
